Profile of a Volunteer

Profile of a Volunteer

I am going to profile myself.

I have volunteered in my church, Kingdom Life Ministries, for over ten years as a youth worker for middle and high school students. I teach Wednesday bible youth class and have taught Sunday school in the past. I have taken youth on camp retreats and outdoor activities. I have also created and participated in youth service on Sundays involving the whole congregation. Many youth have spent tireless night at my house and many children shave had some of my famous dishes.

My volunteering efforts have touched many children. I have seen children and families go through high school and off to college or getting married and having kids of their own. I am always especially proud to see these children still standing on a firm foundation of Christ after they have graduated from High School. Some children come back to tell me how much of an impact that I have made in their life by not giving up on them and just listening to their problems without judgement.

I think my work has impacted others because I was so patient with them.  I built a rapport with them so that I could gain their trust. After I had their trust then I could begin the work of helping them. Some of them just needed a mentor and so I was that as well. I spent several hours a week with these children besides the regular service times. I really love these kids!

I think the vital take-away message is advocating for someone or something always has benefits and outcomes. I always try to make my youth feel appreciated and important, build their self-esteem and instill confidence. I feel as if I am the voice for children and that's why I advocate for them. Advocacy is needed in this country so that children do not feel alone.
