My Own Capacity

The issues impacting young children and families that fuel my passion is inequity. 

The skills that I bring to my advocacy work is how to build a rapport with families and gain their trust so that now they are collaborating with me and are teachable. I treasure empowering parents and I do it every chance I get because so many parents are defeated and beat down from being in the system too long and being disrespected. I approach all of my families with positive words and affirmations – a strength-based approach. I meet them where they are at and I build from there. I am culturally competent with most of my families but if I get a culture that I am not familiar with I make sure to study that culture before I visit the home. I make sure parents know that they are the experts of their child and that I learn from them; we are partners and are on the same team.
